The Women’s Premier League (WPL) introduces an exciting concept, featuring a five-team franchise tournament dedicated to women cricketers. Spearheaded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the same organization behind the renowned Indian Premier League (IPL) for men’s cricket, the WPL promises a thrilling platform for women’s cricket.
Scheduled from Feb 23 to March 17, the inaugural season of WPL 2024 will unfold across multiple venues in India, hosting a total of 22 exhilarating matches. The participating teams in this groundbreaking season include Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Giants (GG), and UP Warriorz (UPW).
Each team is slated to face its opponents twice during WPL 2024, ensuring a competitive atmosphere with a maximum of eight round-robin fixtures per side. With 20 league matches in total, the tournament is set to deliver intense cricketing action.
Victorious teams stand to earn 2 points for a win, while the opposing side gains nothing in the event of a loss. In case of a tie, a thrilling Super Over will determine the outcome, ensuring nail-biting finishes. Moreover, if a match is abandoned due to inclement weather, both teams will share one point each.
As the league progresses, the top three teams atop the points table will secure berths in the knockout stage of WPL. In instances where two teams are tied on points, the net-run-rate (NRR) will serve as the tiebreaker, underscoring the importance of performance consistency.
Marking a pivotal moment in the tournament, the second and third-placed teams will clash in the Eliminator match on March 15. The victor of this encounter will advance to the final showdown of WPL 2024, facing off against the table-topping team from the round-robin stage.
